This week's easy birdhouse watercolor tutorial for beginners, 'The Little House in the Garden,' started with something I've loved for as long as I can remember: tiny little houses.
I've always loved dollhouses. The smaller the furniture, the happier I am. So it probably won't surprise you that I've always had a soft spot for birdhouses too. They're like dollhouses for birds.
Funny thing is, I never had one growing up in Michigan. After I got married and we had our own yard in California, friends made us several, and I loved every one. Between my dad feeding the birds every winter in Michigan and our own bird houses and fountains in California, nothing beats coffee outside, watching the birds come and go.
So this week, I did the next best thing. I painted the birdhouse I've always wanted. Pink roof, a robin keeping watch on top, coneflowers and daisies cheerfully sitting underneath, a butterfly drifting past on a loopy pen trail. And one tiny heart on the door, because no painting leaves my table without one.
And here is the little house I painted:

A Fun Trick: Mix-Your-Own Wood
There's something about a birdhouse that just makes me exhale. It's such a small thing, a little wooden box on a post, but it says you're welcome here. No rent, no resume, no proving you belong. Just a dry roof and a round doorway, waiting.
That's what I kept thinking about while I painted. A birdhouse is such a hopeful and cheerful thing. Shelter in the winter, and come spring, a safe place to build a nest and lay eggs. A whole new beginning in one tiny wooden house.
I think that's why birdhouses feel nostalgic. People have put them up for generations, a simple, old-fashioned kindness: making a home for somebody else, even if that somebody has wings. That quiet, tranquil-garden feeling is where my creativity blooms best.
So I painted the simplest version of it. Not every plank, not every petal. Just the feeling: a cozy little house, a robin keeping watch, flowers cheerfully sitting underneath.
And because no painting leaves my table without one, there's a tiny heart on the door. Some signatures are initials. Mine is a heart.
This project also gave me another chance to play with our Fall Collection palette. This week's colors are called Harvest Home: Sunlit Gold, Rust Orchard, Fallen Bark, Evergreen Hush and Dusty Bloom.
The birdhouse was perfect for it.
I washed the little house in warm woody browns, gave it a pink Dusty Bloom roof, and let the coneflowers and daisies bring in the gold and pink. Evergreen Hush worked naturally for the leaves and stems.
One of my favorite things about working with a limited palette is discovering how many colors you can make without reaching for another tube of paint.
There's also a very simple trick in this week's tutorial that you can use in all kinds of paintings.
No light brown on your palette? You can mix your own wood tone. Swirl rust, golden yellow and a touch of green together, and you'll get a warm, woody brown that's perfect for a birdhouse.
Play with the amounts. More yellow makes it lighter and warmer. More rust makes it deeper. That's the fun part, and no two mixes will look exactly alike, which is exactly as it should be.
For this week's project, we'll paint a whimsical birdhouse garden together from beginning to end.
We'll start with an easy outline, wash in loose watercolor layers using our Harvest Home colors, add the robin, the butterfly and the flowers, and finish with a fine-tip black pen. That's always my favorite moment, when the wobbly wash suddenly looks like it meant to do that all along.
And yes, there's a tiny heart in there too. ❤️

No watercolor experience is necessary. You can trace the outline if you'd rather not draw the birdhouse yourself, and you certainly don't need to use the exact same paints I do.
The idea isn't to make yours look exactly like mine.
It's to paint something that makes you exhale.

Are birdhouses hard to paint in watercolor?
No! A birdhouse is one of the friendliest subjects for a beginner. It's mostly simple shapes: a rectangle, a triangle roof and a round doorway. In this easy birdhouse watercolor tutorial, we keep everything loose and whimsical, so wobbly lines just add charm.
What watercolor colors do I need for this birdhouse painting?
I used my five-color Fall Collection palette: Hansa Yellow Light, Transparent Red Oxide, Raw Umber, Sap Green and Quinacridone Rose. You don't need these exact paints. Similar yellow, rusty orange, brown, green and pink watercolors will work.
Do I need to know how to draw to paint this birdhouse?
No. This project is designed for beginners, and you can use a simple traced outline if drawing feels intimidating. The goal is to enjoy painting the shapes and colors, not to create an architecturally perfect birdhouse.
How do you make the butterfly's loopy trail?
With a fine-tip black pen! After your paint is dry, just draw a wandering loopy line behind the butterfly. There is no right way to do it. Loopy and wandering is the whole point.
What if I don't have brown paint?
Mix your own. Swirl rust, golden yellow and a touch of green together on your palette until you get a warm wood tone you like. It's one of my favorite tricks.
What if my birdhouse comes out crooked?
Good. Wonky becomes whimsical around here. A crooked little roof just gives your birdhouse more personality.
Today I create a home for happiness.
I like this week's Heart Practice because it's something you can carry with you all week, paintbrush or not.
In gratitude, you can say a little thank-you for the small shelters in your life. The people, the places, the little corners that make you feel welcome.
Then, take a deep breath and smile at your painting.
Sometimes the smallest things, a little wooden box on a post, a few brushstrokes on paper, remind us of the biggest truth: you belong here.
With heart and color,
💛 Donna

How Do I Know if This Virtual Seminar Is for Me?
I'm a new entrepreneur, will this method work for me?
There is a LOT to learn when it comes to marketing your business and making money online or offline. There are tons of methods and strategies out there and I guarantee, if you Google, "How to make money as a new entrepreneur" and start reading, you will quickly become overwhelmed. That's why I teach the most critical and tried and true methods to business owners who are just starting out. Even if you've been in business for years, there's a good chance you are not taking advantage of one of the best ways to grow your business, and I explain it fully in this virtual presentation.
I'm not gonna lie, there's a lot of information packed into this seminar, but don't worry! The best thing you can do for your business is to watch the presentation, take notes in the included workbook, and get started. Become educated but don't over-educate yourself. Things are rapidly evolving in today's business world and just when you think you have it all figured out, things will change. The good news is it is getting easier and easier to combine technology with tried and true methods and become a 'work from anywhere at any time' entrepreneur and make a full or part-time income with very little overhead.
So dive in, watch my virtual seminar and learn how you can start growing your new business quickly, today.

Can this seminar really help me start to make more money?
When it comes to marketing and making more money, there are a LOT of ways to do it, and they can all be successful! I've found the main problem to be a lack of focus and consistent, persistent action if a business owner is not making progress. The key is to stay focused and not jump around from one latest marketing fad to the next. I recommend you chose one path and stay on it for a bare minimum of 90 days. Then, see what's working and what is not and make changes as appropriate.
In my seminar, "Collaboration Mastery", I teach a strategy that is proven to work if you stay with it and take consistent action. I can't guarantee you'll make money, that really is up to you and how much effort you want to put in. What I can do is offer you guidance and support as you embark on your entrepreneurial journey, and celebrate with you when you reach your goals; and I look forward to that!

If I implement your method, how long will it take to earn money?
How long it takes for you to start to turn a profit in your business is really up to you. Every business and business owner is different, with their own unique personalities and businesses. What I recommend is you pick a strategy and then stick with it for at least 90 days or one business quarter, then rinse and repeat, tweaking as necessary. The number one reason that businesses fail is they spend way too much money at the beginning, then jump around frantically from one method to the next, trying to make something work. It takes time and energy to build any business.
I am happy to support you on your journey. Watch my seminar and see what you think. If you create a 90 day plan of action and stay with it, there's a great chance you will see results by the end of that time.

Is this presentation live online? What if I can't make it live at that time?
This was a live presentation that has recently ended. But no worries that you didn't attend it live, you'll have immediate access to the recording (check your email for the link) and you can always email us with any questions you have.
Is there a way to get help from a 'real' person if I have more questions?
Yes! Absolutely! I am a small business owner/solopreneur and I am proud of the fact that when you talk to someone, you will talk directly to me; no VA, hired coach or other person will talk with you, you get me 100% of the time! With that said, I always offer a complimentary one time 1:1 laser focus session to clients and potential clients. We hop on Zoom for 15 minutes, you tell me what you're struggling with in your business and I help you map out a 3 step plan for what to do next. No strings attached. I see it as a way to get to know people and develop a working relationship, not a sales call, so no pressure. Visit my site at https://www.donnaloeffler.com/ to schedule a time to talk with me.
