I have a confession to make. I have a hard time sitting still. Somewhere along the way I picked up the belief that rest has to be earned - that if I'm not doing something useful I'm falling behind. So when I sat down to paint this week's beach watercolor tutorial, something unexpected happened. I felt myself exhale.

The Beach Chair That's Just Waiting

There's something about a beach chair facing the water that stops you mid-thought.

It's not asking anything of you. It's not checking your to-do list or wondering if you've been productive enough today. It's just sitting there - red and white stripes, golden straw hat perched on one side, and the whole afternoon ahead of it.

I painted my name on the back of mine. Because this chair? It's mine. And yours has your name on it too.

What Ollie Taught Me About Sitting Still

Lately I've been learning something from my new maltipoo puppy, Ollie. 🐾

When I take him outside in the mornings it's nearly impossible to get anything done. He needs to sniff everything, investigate every corner of the yard. And so I just sit. In the spring sunshine, which is beautiful right now, warm and unhurried.

Some mornings I fret about it. All the things I should be doing. All the emails, all the tasks, all the ways I could be more productive.

And then I look at Ollie, completely content in his warm patch of sunshine, and I think - maybe this is exactly what I need. Maybe sitting still isn't falling behind. Maybe it's the whole point.

This beach watercolor tutorial is painted in that spirit. Permission to sit. Permission to rest. Permission to just be for a little while.

Your Beach Watercolor Tutorial Color Palette

Five colors is all you need for this beach watercolor tutorial:

Shoreline Red - the bold red stripes that give the chair its classic summery personality. Confident and cheerful.

Sea Glass - a soft blue for the water. Keep it watery and loose - you want it to feel like light, not paint.

Sandy Toes - the warm golden sand beneath the chair. This is your secret weapon - it ties the whole painting together and keeps everything feeling warm and sunny.

Summer Straw - a golden yellow for the straw hat resting on the back of the chair.  A little goes a long way here.

Driftwood - a warm brown for the wooden chair frame. This is the detail that grounds the whole painting and makes it feel real.

Mixing tip: Sandy Toes goes everywhere this week. Use it for the ground, mix a touch of it into your Driftwood for the wooden frame, and let it whisper into the edges of your Sea Glass sky. That's what gives this painting that warm hazy beach light feeling.

How to Paint the Beach Chair - 6 Easy Steps

Here's the simple breakdown:

Step 1: Lightly sketch or trace the beach chair outline. Tracing is completely fine - it gets you straight to the painting without any drawing anxiety. There's a PDF printable in the description of the YouTube video above.

Step 2: Paint the sandy ground beneath the chair with Sandy Toes, keeping it loose and uneven for a natural feel. Add the soft blue Sea Glass to the water and sky behind the chair. Let it blend softly at the edges. 

Step 3: Paint the golden straw hat, adding layers to the band and under the brim to add contrast and depth. 

Step 4: Add the warm brown Driftwood color to the wooden chair frame.

Step 5: Paint the red stripes on the chair fabric. Work confidently and leave the white stripes as bare paper - no paint needed there.

Step 6: Finish with a permanent black fine tip pen for the details. And don't forget - add your name to the back of the chair and make it truly yours! 🏖️

Permission to Sit

I've been thinking this week about how many of us were taught - quietly, without anyone meaning to - that rest has to be earned. That the busier we are the more we matter. That sitting still is the same as being lazy.

And I wonder how many beach chairs have gone un-sat-in because of that belief.
